Benoît Huot – Interview with World Para Swimming Champ

December 26th, 2009 by vivian is virtual

Remember our boy, Benoît Huot? Well he’s just scored four medals at the Para Swimming World Short Course Championships in Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil! Check out our latest interview below:

Q: What significance did the Rio competition hold?
A: This competition was very important, since it was the first world championship following the Beijing Games. It gave us the chance to measure ourselves against other international champions.

Q: How did it go for you?
A: Very well. I was very satisfied with my results. The six races I competed in gave me four silver medals, plus I broke six personal and Canadian records. I also took fourth place in my two other races.

Q: In general, how would you sum up the last year?
A: I had a very good season, both in training and competition. I swam very fast throughout the summer, most notably at the Can-Am Championships in Edmonton, allowing me to represent Canada at the World Championships.

Q: What are the next competitions that you’ll be aiming at in Canada or internationally? Is there one competition in particular we should look for?
A: The next big meet for para swimmers is the 50m World Championship in Eindhoven, in the Netherlands, this August 2010. There’s also the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in October 2010.

Q: What are your goals for the next year?
A: They’re mainly physical fitness goals. I’m going to try and increase my muscle mass and gain strength, to increase my power in the pool. I’m of course also hoping to qualify for Eindhoven and best my personal times.

Can’t wait to see how many more seconds Benoît’s going to shave off! Know that VIA Rail is thrilled to continue sponsoring such a phenomenal athlete in the new year.

Top 5: what to see and do – Jasper

December 10th, 2009 by vivian is virtual

Forget hibernating at home – head to Jasper! Deep in the Alberta Rockies, this area offers views, wilderness and enough winter fun to tempt anyone into the cold. I know my dream Jasper weekend includes:

1- Skiing AND snowboarding at Marmot Basin
With over 3,000 vertical feet of slopes ranging from steep alpine bowls to tree-lined glades, and a rep for uncrowdedness, this is a must-visit resort.

  2- Icefields Parkway road trip
This scenic drive cuts across the backbone of the Canadian Rockies, offering up soaring peaks, ancient glaciers, brilliant lakes and pristine forests.

3- Touring the Columbia Icefield
Ride in safety from an Ice Explorer onto the surface of the Athabasca Glacier while learning how glaciers form.

4- Backcountry trek in Jasper National Park
Step into the snowshoes of a fur trader or strap on cross-country skis to travel deep snow, spectacular vistas and wildlife.
5- Moonlit walk of Maligne Canyon
Inch carefully over an icy shelf threaded through sheer limestone cliffs and caves to reach (and touch) the frozen beauty of Angel Falls.

So get set to board a train, burn off some calories and enjoy that fireplace lounge even more!

December 7th, 2009 by vivian is virtual

Forever true to their reputation for joie de vivre, the people of Quebec certainly know how to celebrate the holidays. If you’re a Christmas-a-holic, here are five Christmas markets that are sure to fill you with even more good cheer all through the month of December.

OKA To prepare your table for the holiday season, the Abbey at Oka invites you to discover many festive products and items crafted by local artisans and producers. Don’t miss the concerts, tastings and cooking demonstrations too. Every Fri-Sat-Sun in December, and Dec 21-22-23 to boot.

SHERBROOKE How splendid to see a 50-foot Christmas tree lit up by 30,000 lights! Once inside the market, you can browse original gifts, unique holiday decorations, and food galore. There’s even a miniature tree for the kiddies. Every weekend in December.

LONGUEUIL Located minutes south of Montreal, Longueuil offers the most stunning Christmas display with 40 small decorated houses located across the old city park. Costumed choirs, a miniature train, cooking demos and music. Make merry from December 4-21.

QUEBEC CITY Flock to the old city quarters to browse more than 1,000 goodies sold by over 70 artisans and producers. Find some new holiday traditions every day in December, from 9a.m. to 6p.m.

TROIS RIVIERES Cool gifties, traditional music, delicious holiday treats and Santa Claus presiding over his own merry village. If you’re near the Parc Champlain between December 10-20, don’t miss the fun.

Sorry – all the websites are in French, but I wanted to make sure you got the right addresses. Jingle, jingle, jingle!
